In the 1950s, mountaineers from England, France and other typically European countries began to travel to North India and Nepal to climb some of the highest mountains in the world at an altitude of more than 8,000 meters, and further up through the 60s and 70s, it became more and more common to head to the Himalayas to experience the beautiful landscapes and rich culture on foot.
Did you know that India has 22 recognized languages? India is a huge country with 43 million cities and a total population of more than one billion. Many people have a hard time, but India is also a beautiful country with lots of cultural richness and overwhelming nature. In 1947, there was an official showdown with the caste system. There is still "something about" the castes, but also some respect between "high and low". India is experiencing economic growth, the middle class is gaining ground, and most travelers experience an exciting mix of the original India with a wealth of ceremonies, cultural events and a progressive modern India.
India always offers surprises. Here from Ladakh in relation to a Budhist festival and lectures by the Dalai Lama
Goa and other destinations in the south became popular among hippies and other curious souls, who came to gain insight into a rich cultural history as well as to practice yoga, dance, music, meditation and other activities.
- My own first meeting with India was in the spring, 2014. I had flown to Delhi from Bangkok and quickly found myself in a jumble of sacred cows, bicycles and a lot of curious Indians. After a couple of hectic days in the big city, I went a little south to Agra in good company to experience the sunrise at the beautiful Taj Mahal, and soon I was on my way to Rishikesh by the river Ganges and Dharamshala on the edge of the Himalayas.
In Rishikesh, for example, you can experience small sandy beaches and ceremonies along the river Ganges. The Beatles lived here for a while and wrote some of their famous songs, and you can still visit the old "Beatles Ashram". Rishikesh is a station for pilgrims arriving from near and far, and every year the area hosts an international yoga festival as well as a major film festival with documentaries from all over the world.
Many people travel alone, but India can be a big mouthful. - My first good experiences with yoga were in Camino de Santiago 2012 with Mincho Fuertes. Happiness be your memory. Since then, I have practiced yoga in India and Nepal, among other places, with many different teachers. A special thanks to Mincho and Albergue Verde, Padma Nair and Padmakarma in South India as well as Surinder Singh, Swasti yoga, Rishikesh. In addition, thanks my dear family, friends and the many amazing people I have met on my way.

There are many schools and traditions of yoga with different ideas about how yoga helps us physically, mentally, and spiritually. We practice on the yoga mat, but yoga is also about mindset and lifestyle in general.
- Yoga is neither as a religion nor a competition, but an open and humble practice where we train the body and the sense of ourselves, each other and our choices in life. There are many self-proclaimed gurus in yoga and meditation. Some may know better than others, but yoga is for everyone - a personal practice that should be based on individual wishes and needs.
Meditation. Slowly, we direct our attention inwards while cultivating a positive inner dialogue. Yoga is more than stretching and movement.
- Maybe you dont wanna travel the straight way back to Delhi ? Padma Nair, Kovalam, Kerala

In both Rishikesh and around Dharamshala, there are plenty of opportunities to practice yoga, meditation and other activities and workshops in e.g. music, dance, literature, cultural history, cooking, jewellery, as well as other types of arts and crafts. You can go hiking, experience waterfalls and local temples, and then it is a pleasure to hang out at the many restaurants and cafes among locals and other travelers with food and drink for all tastes.
With the Himalayas and other more or less mountainous regions in the north and tea plantations, tropical forest, river delta, beautiful beaches and much more in the south. India has many faces, overwhelming cities, an impressive cultural treasure and magnificent nature. While there are many prejudices about India, and some hold water, overall India is an amazing experience.
- Taj Mahal, Agra. A "must see" in India
Basicly we are not very different from each other and many other spices with eyes, nose og mouth

Our modern world undoubtedly offers us a lot of advantages and opportunities, but we also live in a time with a wealth of technology, overwhelming advertising, perfect surfaces and quick solutions, and sometimes it can be difficult to find the time and energy to cultivate ourselves, each other and the simpler pleasures of life.
I give ongoing instructions, but everyone is first and foremost their own yoga teacher and responsible for adjusting the effort to what feels good and suitably challenging. One step at a time, as they say. It's not about being indifferent, but about focusing on the process.
Everyone has different conditions in life, but life is also like a land of opportunities, and every day is an opportunity to experience and learn. What does your next trip look like?
- I myself am a trained yoga instructor in hatha yoga with 2 x 200 hours yoga trainer course in India, and I want to inspire others to cultivate their own personal flow and rhythm on and off the yoga mat. We stretch comfortably and with the help of a focus on breathing and a patient inner dialogue, we direct our attention to the body and our presence and possibilities in the present.
